Two to four weeks before the move
Check which providers serve the new address, compare plan details, and schedule installation or delivery. Review which routers, streaming boxes, cables, and smart-home devices should actually move with you.
- Internet provider and activation date
- Modem or gateway ownership
- Current phone and streaming plans
- Devices worth moving, replacing, donating, or recycling
Build one technology essentials box
Keep chargers, a power strip, Ethernet cables, remotes, the internet gateway, a laptop, and needed adapters with you instead of on the moving truck. Make sure you can reach usernames and recovery methods securely.
Set up the network first
Confirm the internet connection, choose the Wi-Fi name and password, and place the router in an open, central location. Test priority rooms before deciding whether mesh equipment is necessary.
Connect devices in priority order
Begin with phones and computers, followed by work equipment, TVs, printers, and smart-home devices. Update each device, confirm the correct account, adjust settings, and test the function you expect to use.
Leave yourself a simple home-tech guide
Write down the provider, support number, equipment location, Wi-Fi name, and the purpose of network boxes. Label unusual cables and note which apps control the thermostat, doorbell, cameras, speakers, or other devices.
